Switching registered agents is one of the least expensive filings North Carolina offers. The document is Form BE-06, the Statement of Change of Registered Office and/or Registered Agent, the state fee is $5, and the filing goes to the North Carolina Secretary of State under N.C.G.S. § 55D-31. The same form serves LLCs, corporations, nonprofits, and partnerships, so the process looks identical no matter what kind of entity you run.

Common Reasons to Change Your Registered Agent

People change their registered agent for various reasons:

Privacy concerns — You're currently using your home address as your registered agent address, and you've realized it's sitting in public records anyone can search. You want to fix that.

Service quality issues — Your current agent doesn't forward documents promptly, misses compliance notifications, or provides poor customer support.

Cost considerations — You're paying more than necessary for basic registered agent service, or your rates increased significantly at renewal.

Relocation — You or your current agent is moving outside North Carolina, and you need a new agent with a North Carolina address.

Feature gaps — Your current agent doesn't provide document scanning, online portal access, or compliance reminders.

Business changes — You're restructuring your operations and want to consolidate registered agent services.

The Form: BE-06

North Carolina uses one official form for agent changes: Form BE-06, Statement of Change of Registered Office and/or Registered Agent. You can download Form BE-06 directly from the Secretary of State. The form recites the $5 fee on its face and is filed with the Secretary of State's Business Registration Division. It handles three situations: changing the agent, changing the registered office address, or both at once.

Steps to Change Your Registered Agent in North Carolina

  1. Choose a new registered agent who qualifies under N.C.G.S. § 55D-30. That means an individual who lives in North Carolina, or a corporation, nonprofit, or LLC (domestic, or foreign and authorized here) whose business office is identical to the registered office it will maintain. We meet every requirement.
  2. Complete Form BE-06. You'll list your entity name, the new agent's name, and the registered office street address. A PO box can't stand in for the street address, though a separate mailing address may be added alongside it.
  3. File the form with the North Carolina Secretary of State and pay the $5 fee. Five dollars total. No publication requirement, no extra state charges.
  4. Confirm the change in the state's records. Until the filing posts, your old agent remains the official recipient. Once it does, all service of process and state mail routes to the new agent.

A Note If Your Annual Report Is Coming Up

The online annual report can update your registered office address, but it won't accept a new agent name. If you want a different registered agent on file, that change rides on Form BE-06 or on a paper annual report, not the online one. Filing BE-06 first keeps your April 15 report simple.

What Happens During the Transition

When you switch to us, we make the transition smooth. You provide your business information during enrollment. We give you the details you need for your state filing. Once the North Carolina Secretary of State processes your change, we become your official registered agent.

Your previous agent continues serving until the state approves the change. We start receiving your documents once the update takes effect in state records.

Why People Switch to us

Privacy Protection — Our address appears on your public filings instead of your home address. Your personal information stays out of public databases. This is the main reason many people switch.

Clear Pricing — $99 per year, flat, for the registered agent service. No setup fees, no hidden charges, no premium tiers. Less than the $125 to $436 many competitors charge.

Same-Day Document Processing — We scan documents and post them to your portal the same day they arrive. You get immediate email notification; mailing a physical original to you is available separately, per piece.

Compliance Reminders — We track North Carolina deadlines and send reminders for annual reports (due April 15) and other filing requirements.

Straightforward Service — No unnecessary complications. Just registered agent service done right.

The Privacy Advantage

If you're switching because your home address is currently in public records, understand that changing to a professional registered agent won't remove your address from old filings. Those remain in the state's historical records.

But going forward, our address appears on all new filings and updates. Over time, your old home address becomes less prominent in search results as new filings accumulate. And most importantly, your current address stays private if you've moved since those old filings.

Making the Switch

We've helped many North Carolina businesses transition from other registered agents. The process is simpler than most people expect.

Sign up for our service. We provide the information you need for your state filing. You submit Form BE-06 to the North Carolina Secretary of State along with the $5 fee. After the state processes your submission, we're your registered agent.

You get immediate access to your document portal where you can view correspondence, manage account information, and check for documents anytime.

North Carolina's Annual Report Reminder

While we're talking about state fees, remember that the state charges $200 for a mailed annual report, or $202 to $203 online once its electronic fee is added, due April 15 each year. This is separate from our registered agent fee—you pay the state directly.

We send reminders before the deadline so you don't miss it. This compliance support is included in your $99 annual registered agent fee.
